Tomi Laine – DevOps Engineer
Tomi Laine, a young DevOps Engineer at Profilence, is on the verge of completing his engineering thesis and graduating from the Oulu University of Applied Sciences. He has been with Profilence for over a year.
His journey with Profilence began as a summer trainee, following a recommendation from a friend about an open position at the company. He soon discovered it was such a nice place to work that he wanted to stay. To his delight, he was offered a permanent contract.
“I'm in my dream job."
Tomi works in backend coding, information security and, in his own words, "everything in between." But the flexibility goes both ways: whenever his academic commitments have necessitated a specific work schedule, Profilence has been accommodating. Tomi sees Profilence as an employer that is supportive of continuous learning and employee development.
Permission to innovate
One of the primary reasons Tomi enjoys working at Profilence is the company's exceptional work community. He describes the atmosphere as relaxed, yet tight-knit.
"Originally, I applied for a position in test automation. However, during the interview, it became apparent that there was also a need for a DevOps Engineer. I expressed interest in the opportunity, as it seemed to suit my skills. I’m happy I ended up in this role.”
“Each day presents new learning opportunities.”
Profilence believes in testing new ideas and Tomi is allowed to innovate.
"I'm encouraged to present my own ideas, try them out, and expand my role into new areas. Each day presents new learning opportunities. My role at Profilence has provided me with extensive exposure to various aspects of the profession, enhancing my capabilities as a DevOps Engineer. The definition of the role is broad," Tomi says.
"The fact that the work atmosphere at Profilence is positive is extremely important to me. I'm also excited to have received positive feedback about my work. The job has exceeded my expectations. I get to do what I love every day.”
Tomi's work day adapts to his own personal rhythm
Tomi's motivation at Profilence is fueled by the freedom to explore new challenges and the continuous learning opportunities that his work provides. He appreciates the open-ended nature of his responsibilities, which allows him to expand his skill set and professional knowledge organically. There is a sense of mutual respect, and Tomi values the autonomy he experiences at Profilence, allowing him to tailor his workday to suit his personal preferences and schedules.
"My typical work day starts at around 9 AM, since I enjoy slow mornings. First, I go through the IT tickets, identifying and resolving issues, and then I plan my next tasks. I'll have a coffee break and lunch, followed by a few more efficient hours at the office, and wrap up at around 5 PM. Sometimes, I voluntarily extend my work into the evening or night, as I'm a night person. No one forces me, but I might even work through the night. That's when I'm the most productive.”
“I recommend Profilence as an employer. There are so many different opportunitites here for a coder.”
From hobby to profession, Tomi is in his dream job
Tomi's journey at Profilence shows how a personal passion can seamlessly transition into a professional path.
"From a young age, I was interested in setting up servers, creating websites, and coding. Now these are all part of the job, and I can test things in my small home lab. It helps me resolve issues at work," he says.
"I'd say that it doesn’t really matter what your educational background is. Your skills, interest, and willingness to learn are first and foremost what enable you to succeed over just having qualifications."
"I'm very happy with my job. You could even say that it's my dream job. I would definitely recommend Profilence as an employer. There are so many different opportunities here for a coder. The hierarchy is low and communication is open,” Tomi concludes.
