Kalpani Ranasinghe – Backend Developer
In 2022, Kalpani Ranasinghe took the leap and moved all the way across the globe from Sri Lanka to northern Finland. Drawn by the Master's programme in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Oulu and an accompanying scholarship, she bravely embraced the cultural shift.
“I felt it was important to continue to gain work experience while studying."
Despite some initial doubts about adjusting to a more reserved culture, her ability to adapt and her desire for professional growth led her to swiftly find work as a Backend Developer at Profilence.
“Although I already had a couple of years of developing experience when I came here, I felt it was important to continue to gain even more work experience while studying. Profilence gave me that opportunity ,” Kalpani says.
“I see very good learning potential at Profilence.”
Profilence offers the possibility to grow through mentoring.
“I see very good learning potential at Profilence, since I’m in the early stage of my career. I’ve learned to write high quality code at Profilence and I’ve become more efficient in other technical aspects of the job. This is a good place to hone those skills.”
The entire work culture supports growth, both on an individual and a company level. Kalpani is impressed at how management has taken on a mentoring role and shown her how to improve her code, while discussing the impact of her work as well as her career progression.
“I can see a future for myself in this company. My goal is to become a Senior Developer, write code independently and, eventually, mentor juniors, like I’m being mentored right now.”
An international team works well with international customers
Profilence’s work culture brings people together and unites them, working in co-operation rather than competitively. Some of the employees work remotely from various locations outside of Finland, e.g. Egypt.
“It’s an international team. This is good, since we’re also working with an international customer base,” says Kalpani.
“We communicate with each other well, even across teams, and everyone is working towards common goals. It’s very motivating. ”
Even working in a male-dominated field doesn’t deter her, “Perhaps when applying, I briefly wondered if it was a disadvantage to be a woman in this field. But they hired me without thinking about it. I feel included and I’m treated as a part of the team. I don’t hesitate to ask questions.”
A supportive work environment
While Kalpani works with code, her academic interests lie within AI. Profilence has been supportive of Kalpani’s studies – her work hours have evolved from part-time to full-time as she has advanced in her university degree. She is driven by the will to gain knowledge, so it’s no wonder that she thrives in this culture of continuous learning.
“Profilence has been very accommodating with my university schedule, allowing me to plan my work hours flexibly, and work remotely when necessary.”
“When you have a small team working hard to make products succeed, you get to work closely with very experienced people.”
It's the challenges that keep Kalpani going
“What I like best about my work are the challenges, they are what keep me going. When I see my work live in the final product, I feel like I’ve done something meaningful and added value to the product,” Kalpani says.
Kalpani concludes, “I would obviously recommend Profilence as an employer, especially from an entry-level employee’s point of view. Compared to larger tech companies, when you have a small team working hard to make products succeed, you get to work closely with very experienced people and learn from them. I don’t think you always get that chance in a large company, because there will be levels of people in between.”
